CANARAIL AWARDED BAFFINLAND RAILWAY DESIGN FOR THE REVISED FEASIBILITY STUDY (May 2011)

The Mary River iron ore deposit is located at 520 kilometres north of the Artic circle, and approximately 143 kilometres from the ocean. Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (BIM) will develop the mine and construct a 143km railway and a commercial dock at Steensby to ship the high quality ore to market.

Since 2005, CANARAIL is Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation’s railway consultant of choice due to its proven expertise in the railway sector. CANARAIL has participated in the life cycle of this project by providing railway design and expertise for the following stages of the of the BIM project:

  • 2005: Scoping Study for the construction and operation of the rail line
  • 2006-07: Definitive Feasibility Study
  • 2008: Detailed Design (project put on hold in December 2008 due to the economic conditions)
  • 2011: Revised Feasibility Study

  • The current Revised Feasibility Study will incorporate CANARAIL’s knowledge, acquired during the detailed designed assignment in 2008, into the preliminary feasibility level design and provide construction quantity data for costing using current cost data. CANARAIL will also update the proposed operation plan and provide revised manpower and equipment requirements for the project financial analysis, which will include the materials and fuels required for operating the railway throughout its life cycle.
