TRACK AND INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Detailed Design and Construction Supervision of the North-South Railway Link (NSR)

Ministry of Finance, Public Investment Fund, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
The North – South Railway Project comprises the construction of a mainly single track railway, which will carry mineral traffic from mines at Hazm Al Jalamid and Az Zabirah to processing facilities in Ras Az Zawr. There will also be a passenger and general freight line from Riyadh to Al Haditha together with depots, ancillary buildings, operational and corporate headquarters and other railway facilities. The total length of the line is approximately 2,400 km. As leader of the consortium mandated to carry out the feasibility study and detailed design of the North South Railway Link, CANARAIL was responsible for project management, technical definition of the railway transportation system, preliminary design of the alignment, construction standards and specifications for track work and shops and functional specifications for signaling and telecom and rolling stock. CANARAIL and its consortium partners are performing on-going program management and construction supervision for the implementation of this project.

Jamuna Bridge Railway Link Project (JBRLP)

Bangladesh Railway, Bangladesh
CANARAIL, as consortium lead, carried out the feasibility study and detailed design for the JBRLP on a fast-track basis in order to ensure that this line was opened to traffic before the new highway connection over the Jamuna bridge had diverted all of the railway’s traffic to the road sector. The project comprised 99 km of new dual gauge track construction and the rehabilitation and conversion to dual gauge (addition of a metre gauge rail to an existing broad gauge track) of approximately 250 km of existing broad gauge line. CANARAIL later undertook the construction supervision of this key project in Bangladesh railway's development plans. Responsibilities included a feasibility analysis, detailed design and then construction supervision including control of schedules and payments. Technical support in the following fields was provided: civil engineering structures, earthworks, topography, track laying, signalling.

Railway Feasibility/Scoping Study Of An Iron Ore Project On Baffin Island

Aker Kvaerner, Baffin Island, Canada
Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation is proposing to develop an iron mine at Mary River on Baffin Island in the extreme North. They propose to transport the ore from the mine site to a port by rail. CANARAIL was retained to first carry out a scoping study for the railway, and resulting from that, a bankable feasibility study including a cost estimate to ± 15% accuracy. This required developing the railway design to an advanced level including addressing the challenges of dealing with permafrost and an environment further north and colder than for any other railway in the world. Accurate lidar survey was commissioned and plan and profile alignments were developed for proposed routes. Preliminary design of six major bridges and numerous structures was completed and track, drainage, signals and telecommunications, maintenance equipment and facilities, and rolling stock were specified. Optimum operational parameters, including fleet size, were defined for transporting over 10 million tonnes of ore per annum with an analysis of operational feasibility for double the volume. The recommended railway will have a total length of more than 195 km of track, including sidings and yards and will involve moving more than 12 million cubic meters of earth and rock.

N'Dangara Track & Signalling Construction Supervision

Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG), Guinea
CANARAIL provided track and signaling technical assistance to the Compagnie des bauxites de Guinée during the construction of the new N'Dangara spur line. CANARAIL's track engineer was responsible for helping the client in planning the work, for providing on-site supervision, for submitting progress reports and for ensuring the link with the Montreal office as to technical issues. The signalling engineer dealt with suppliers on behalf of the client and was responsible for overseeing the installation work.

Double Tracking Study

Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF), Algeria
The goal of the study was to define a track alignment for a railway line running between Oued Tlélat and Zoudj-El-Beghal to the Moroccan border over a distance of 200 km. The study had three main components: preliminary study, preliminary and detailed design engineering. CANARAIL was responsible for train station configuration and the development of technical specifications for superstructure components.

Feasibility Study of a Railway Link

Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT), Montreal, Canada
CANARAIL reviewed all posible layouts for the proposed new Montreal-Repentigny commuter train line. These 13 km layouts should provide service to Mascouche, Terrebonne and Lachenaie, Repentigny/Le Gardeur and Charlemagne municipalities. One of the main characteristics of this project was to propose layouts maximizing the use of the right-of-way of a highway while keeping the option to add a line for each roadway in the middle strip of the highway. Costs related to the implementation of the layouts were also developed and a multicriteria study was carried out to enable the AMT to choose the best possible layout.

Rail Versus Pipeline Options Study

Westmar, Abu Dhabi
As a sub-contractor to WESTMAR and FLUOR, CANARAIL was responsible for the railway component of the GASCO Sour Gas Development Project Pre-FEED Study. The railway component included the following tasks: alignment review; operating plan definition; infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance requirements definition; capital and operating costs definition. The alignment review included a desktop review of a previously determined 120km alignment, and the definition of a new 140km alignment to reach a newly planned gas field further inland. The alignment review included the definition of anticipated earthworks volumes and structure requirements.
