Improvement of a Telecommunications Network
Quebec-Cartier Mining operates a private railway line to transport iron ore extracted from Mount Wright mine to Port-Cartier. CANARAIL was awarded a contract to assess the expected life of the company's telecommunication system, which was old and obsolete, though in good operational condition. CANARAIL evaluated all operational needs. Its specialists then proposed engineering solutions, evaluated their costs and recommended the best solution taking into account the technical value, the cost of the project and the possibility of meeting future needs without major changes to the overall system. The recommended solution was a fibre optic transmission system. Following this study, CANARAIL wrote the technical specifications and contract documents, for providing tendering services including site visits and responses to bidders’ inquiries, and for participating in tender evaluation and contract negotiations. CANARAIL's services were also required by QCM for supervising and monitoring the systems’ equipment installation in the subsequent phases.
